Russia mobilizes 100,000 troops as it seeks to advance Kharkiv region, Kyiv warns – POLITICO

KYIV – Russia has mobilized 100,000 troops and is trying to break through Kyiv’s defenses in the Kharkiv region, according to the Ukrainian military.

As Ukraine focuses its efforts in the south, Moscow’s military has been probing Kyiv’s defenses in the east, in the direction of Kupiansk, Ukrainian military spokesman Serhiy Cherevatyi said. on a national telethon Monday.

According to Cherevatyi, Russia has gathered about 100,000 soldiers, 900 tanks and 555 weapons in the region.

“They are looking for everything to destroy our security. Our soldiers are on strong defense. They will not allow the enemy to do this work,” said Cherevatyi.

The city of Kupiansk, located in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine, was an important location and supply route for Russian troops in the east, until Kyiv recaptured it in their final fall.

Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine General Oleksandr Syrsky it has been confirmed Russia has mobilized its forces to attack Kupiansk, but so far they have not been able to break through.

Syrsky commands Ukraine’s actions around the main battlefield of Bakhmut, where Kyiv has managed to seize control and retake the city that was destroyed by Russia earlier this year.

Russia has also strengthened its position around Bakhmut with additional forces, Syrsky said, and Moscow wants to pass through the Kharkiv region as President Vladimir Putin seeks a major breakthrough.

Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Defense Hanna Maliar agreed with this idea, to say: “As soon as we take up the task and begin to advance, the enemy will immediately take other measures to distract and draw our forces there.”
