Elon Musk has just created a new company that will work to “understand the reality of the universe.” No biggie, then.
Announced on Wednesday, the company, xAI, already has other artificial intelligence (AI) experts from companies such as DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, and Tesla.
This website for Musk’s new company currently has a single page with a profile of its top team and calls for experienced engineers and researchers to join the company in the Bay Area, San Francisco. It also includes the line: “The goal of xAI is to understand the real world environment.”
Meanwhile, in a tweet announcing the new project, Musk said xAI aims to “understand reality.”
There is not much information about what you want to do at this time. However, xAI is planning to hold a Twitter Spaces event at an unspecified time on Friday, July 14, so more information should be revealed there.
It has been rumored for some time that Musk, who currently heads SpaceX and Tesla and owns Twitter, has been wanting to get his foot in the AI door.
In fact, he already has, having been behind OpenAI, the company behind it viral chatbot ChatGPT. Perceived misunderstandings over AI security led Musk to withdraw from OpenAI in 2018, a few years before last year’s launch of the industry’s most powerful AI tool.
Musk’s second major attempt to enter the group appears to be an attempt to challenge the dominance of OpenAI, which is now backed by Microsoft to the tune of billions of dollars.
With several AI companies already developing advanced tools for businesses and consumers, Musk appears to be late to the game. Some may feel that this is because of the preoccupation with Twitter, which has been in turmoil since buying the company in October.
But now Musk will be hoping that by attracting the right team he can have a meaningful impact and challenge the heavy hitters in the AI game.
