“So I was like ‘Oh shoot!’ because I had a woman who used to rush me to the court because the game started and she got a little angry with me because I left a little bit to go to the locker room. Then I went to do my own thing.
“That’s who she is. She’s so light and so open and the energy around her is amazing. It’s so contagious. She’s amazing. Ons-some.”
Jabeur keeps the magic from returning
This year marks the third Grand Slam final for Jabeur, who will face Czech player Marketa Vondrousova after beating Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina in the other semi-final.
Neither Jabuer nor Vondrousova have won a Grand Slam before.
Jabeur lost to Elina Rybakina at Wimbledon last year and was beaten by Iga Swiatek, the current world No.1, at the US Open.
For Vondrousova, this is her second Grand Slam final after being beaten by retired Ash Barty at Roland-Garros in 2019.
He hasn’t made it past the fourth quarter since.
For Clijsters, she sees Jabeur as a better player than when she lost her previous two Grand Slam finals.
“We’ve seen some players get to the finals of a Grand Slam and just about play well and then not do much after that,” Clijsters said.
“I think, the way I was, it’s been different. I lost my last four Grand Slam matches and it can be frustrating and sometimes you start doubting yourself.
“I’ve been talking to the players. Simona Halep, she also lost a couple of finals before winning the first. Ons, too. This is not the time to talk about that kind of thing, it’s just production and what’s going on. She’s been doing it.
“She’s a better player today than she was last year at this time. With Rybakina’s win, against Sabalenka right now, this is a big confidence booster, especially in the tournament. She’s healthy, she’s happy to be a part of this, and he’s in good health. we’ll see now.”
Jabeur and Vondrousova have met six times before, each winning three times.
Vondrousova is arguably the winner of the two most recent tournaments this year at Indian Wells and the Australian Open.
However, Clijsters sees some weaknesses in the world number 42 player.
“Vondrousova is a tough opponent. (Jabeur has) lost her several times. This will work again,” explained Clijsters.
“Then, we saw Vondrusova settle down a little bit in the second set and I think Svitolina made a couple of unforced errors to give it to her.
“Very exciting. The final, there is always more involved than the technical part of our game. Emotion plays a big part in this competition.”
