Sam Short beats Ahmed Hafnaoui to win the 400m freestyle final, video, results


Australian teenager Sam Short was shocked The Olympic Games Champion Ahmed Hafnaoui takes the men’s 400m freestyle title at the GamesWorld Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka.

Short swam a stunning 3:40.68 to edge out the Tunisian star by 0.02 seconds in a thrilling finish. Germany’s Lukas Martens finished third with a time of 3:42.20.

“It’s bloody amazing,” he told Nine after the race.

“I knew it was going to be a double race with 100m to go and he was an Olympic champion.

“I was like hoofs knowing I was in the race with him and I put my hand on the wall first. It’s a dream come true and I didn’t get in. I said it and it feels good to be flexible in front of everyone.”

The win capped a remarkable 12 months for Short, who had melanoma removed from his back last year.

“I bounced back last year amazingly,” he said.

“All the problems I went through last year, this is nothing compared to that really. I’m just enjoying the hard work I’ve put into the bank and I’m enjoying everything.”
