TOKYO: A typhoon on Japan’s southwestern island of Kyushu triggered flash floods and mudslides that killed six people and rescuers are searching for three missing, officials said Tuesday.
The Japan Meteorological Agency downgraded special warnings for heavy rains, issued on Monday in the north of the island, to less severe warnings and advisories, but urged people to be alert for further landslides.
Japan is the latest country to be hit by heavy rains in various parts of the world in recent days, sparking new fears about climate change.
“Townships are still searching for the injured, … but we have been told of three people who have died, another three have died as a result of the accident, three are missing and two are slightly injured,” the Chief. Minister Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno he told a regular press conference.
The rain forced the tire manufacturer Bridgestone suspending work at four factories on Kyushu on Monday, but the plants resumed operations by Tuesday morning, the company said.
