The Nigerian scientist who discovered the first case of mpox is discussing whether the medical crisis is over.

In 2017 in Nigeria, Dr Dimie Ogoina was diagnosed with the world’s first case of mpox in almost 40 years. He sounded the alarm bells, but the world refused to listen.

Five years later, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization declared mpox a global health problem.

As the crisis unfolded, Ogoina’s observations became critical in developing strategies to prevent and control the spread.

In May this year, WHO it ended lamppox emergency after 10 months, but is it over in the Global South?
