Bathurst 1000 2023 | Supercars conducting last-minute crisis meetings with Ford, Chevrolet representatives

BATHURST: Supercars bosses continue to hold crisis meetings with Ford and Chevrolet teams less than 24 hours before practice begins for this weekend’s Bathurst 1000.

Amid a bitter year-long dispute surrounding parity, Ford teams are continuing to campaign for a new front spoiler and rear wing in an effort to shift the aerodynamic balance of its Mustang more towards the rear.

Wide World of Sports understands Dick Johnson Racing, who have homologated the Mustang, has tested the new front spoiler and rear wing on the team’s spare car, and have produced enough to supply the new parts to all Ford teams on the grid immediately should the change be approved.

The team’s spare car will be in action this weekend as the wildcard entry for Simona de Silvestro and Kai Allen in its homologated specification.

Camaros filled the top five finishing positions in last month’s Sandown 500.

A meeting between Supercars and all team bosses was planned for Wednesday morning but was cancelled.

Instead, a series of informal meetings between teams and Supercars have been held throughout Wednesday.

While Ford teams want change, the sticking point for Chevrolet is the threshold to trigger a parity review hasn’t been hit since Darwin.

The last round of aerodynamic revisions were made ahead of the Townsville event.

The Camaro was homologated by Triple Eight Racing.

Earlier in the week, Triple Eight team boss Jamie Whincup — who won the Sandown 500 driving with Broc Feeney — slammed Ford’s “outrageous” demands, and declared the Chevrolet teams had “had enough”.

“We’ve given the Ford guys all year to develop, and they’re as close as they have ever been right now,” he told Castrol Motorsport News.

In a humorous twist, the entire paddock experienced a blackout just after lunchtime that lasted well over an hour and a half.

The main symptom of the Mustang’s aero inefficiencies is an increase in tyre wear and drag, meaning the car is slower in a straight line and also gets slower in corners quicker than the Camaro over a long tyre run.

Considering the Mount Panorama circuit boasts two straights measuring well over a kilometre long, as well as several high-speed corners, the Ford teams are concerned they will be rendered totally uncompetitive.

Chevrolet Camaros have been first over the line in all but one race since the introduction of the Gen3 car at the start of the season.
