In his speech, President Biden called on Republicans who are complaining about his actions to forgive $39 billion in student loans.
The President said in his speech:
I’ve said before that college should be a ticket to the middle class – not a burden that weighs families down for years.
My administration is working on this. Starting today, more than 800,000 student loan borrowers who have been delinquent for 20 years or more will see $39 billion in debt relief as a result of my Administration’s efforts to fix past defaults. These borrowers will join the millions of people my Administration has provided relief to over the past two years – resulting in $116 billion in loan relief to more than 3 million borrowers under my Administration.
But we don’t leave it at that. My administration has worked hard to get the largest Pell Grants increase in a decade, stabilize loan programs like Public Service Loan Forgiveness, and create a new repayment plan that will cut graduate school debt in half and bring monthly payments. zero for low-income borrowers. And, when the Supreme Court made the wrong decision, I immediately announced a new plan to open another way to provide assistance to as many borrowers as possible, as soon as possible.
Republican lawmakers – who had no problem with the government forgiving millions of dollars of their business loans – have tried everything they can to stop me from giving relief to hardworking Americans. Some are criticizing what we announced today, which is going after borrowers who were promised, but not paid, even after paying for years. The fraud is shocking, and the neglect of working and middle class families is even worse.
As long as I am working, I will continue to work to bring the promise of college to every American.
There’s a reason Biden brought in fundraising to support his re-election campaign. TThose who focus on popularity or horse-racing metrics may miss it, but Joe Biden is doing things for the people, and voters have shown all along that when Biden and the Democrats deliver, they are rewarded at the polls.
Biden has found a strong problem with student loans which he has used to explain the fundamental differences between himself and the Republicans.
The GOP complains about anything that helps the working and middle class.
President Biden knows where to vote for him, and he’s doing everything he can to help them.
