Crawley smashed 189 runs from 182 balls and Root 84 from 95, the pair combining for a 206-run stand at Old Trafford.
The hosts lead by 67 runs in a close match with Ben Stokes (24) and Harry Brook (14) batting starting again midway through the third day.
